Videogames Are Now Recognized are a Separate Category at the Grammy Awards

It has been announced that the Grammy Awards, presented by the Recording Academy to recognize outstanding achievement in the music industry, will include a videogame category for their 2023 event.

Specifically, the Best Score Soundtrack For Video Games And Other Interactive Media award recognizes ” excellence in score soundtrack albums composed mainly of original compositions and primarily designed for, or as a companion to, a current videogame or other interactive media released during the qualification period.” This is one of five new categories added to the Grammy Awards for 2023, which also includes Songwriter of the Year (Non-Classical), Best Alternative Music Performance, Best Americana Performance, and Best Spoken Word Poetry Album.

Videogame music has already received its first Grammy award. A decade ago, Baba Yetu won Christopher Tin an award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists. However, the song was originally composed for Civilization 4 in 2005. Additionally, Austin Wintory was nominated for a Grammy for the Journey soundtrack in 2013.

It is planned that the Grammy Awards will take place on January 31, 2023.
